"Learn to code" is what media types have been glibly telling jobless manufacturing workers for years -- jobless media types are now being trolled with the same glib advice, in order to highlight how unfair and condescending it is. Just in case anybody fails to grasp the meme 🙂

Actual examples of media types glibly giving that advice to unemployed miners? The examples I've seen were sympathetic articles about ex-miners training for computer jobs. Is it supposed to be wrong to write about that?

Pretty sure Amazon just opened up near their spots in DC and NYC, they can just go pack boxes full of books from writers that still have jobs.

How ironic that the economic model which dismantled the manufacturing industry is doing the same to the media industry.

Not the same! One shifted to another location for cheaper labor, the other lowered the barrier to entry for increased competition from smaller operators.

I wonder if the newly unemployed journos wish they'd done a better job of covering the economic realities of the neoliberal agenda.

Yep. The "lifetime learning" thing is for the lower orders only, a way to frame their economic suffering in terms of their own failure to keep up with the times, and they really don't like it being thrown back at all the beautiful people in The New Brooklyn.

People are being diverted away from this origin for obvious reasons. Thank you for bringing it up. It was pretty much the standard hand-wave in 2016 over concerns of industry wellbeing. Not so nice, is it?

Telling a group of people that their jobs are going away and that they need new skills is different from contacting people through social media that were just laid off telling them "learn to code."

Dumb question perhaps, but why did journos get so upset by this? I get that they were distraught over losing their jobs, and this was seen as a vindictive pile on by pol enemies, but "learn to code" seems a fairly benign attack. Haven't followed closely, so what am I missing?
