He has bucked hawkish consensus in areas where he's obviously had some independent thoughts over the years, for better or worse: Korea, Middle East, etc. On Venezuela, a country he likely ignored his entire life, he's just a vehicle for enacting the desires of hawkish ideologues

Really? I think on this particular occasion gave a fair gloss on your belief that Trump is at heart a non-interventionist and the problem is he appointed hawks.

I was not affirming that Trump is "good," as your glib remark implied. What do you think is a plausible explanation for why his approach to North Korea and Venezuela differs? Could it have anything to do with his "instincts" overriding the counsel of advisors, in the case of NK?

Obama told him NK was one of the more difficult challenges and Trump wanted to show how great a deal maker he is (and win the Nobel prize, too). Plus, he has reversed Obama's successes on Cuba and Iran. This has much more to do with personality than ideology...

How does raising the subject of recent threats against VE and contrasting with silence about NK imply that the person asking thinks anything good about Trump?

Trump threatened nuclear war for a couple of months, had a summit, completely caved to Kim, and declared it a glorious foreign policy achievement. How would you characterize his torching of the Iran deal or his perhaps soon to be military action in Venezuela?
