It's not immediately clear who a Howard Schultz independent candidacy would advantage or disadvantage. People always over-interpret, wrongly, the effects of third party candidates. This was a constant throughout 2016. Reminder when people said Gary Johnson would hurt Trump. lol

Progressives, period. He's trying to hold the DNC hostage the same way Bloomberg did when it looked like Bernie had a shot. "If you don't nominate a centrist who will preserve my tax cut, I'll split the vote."

It’s not just a question of who he is likely to help. Imagine as an extreme example that if Shultz did not run, the Democrat would beat Trump with probability 1, and that Schultz would increase the Democrat’s margin with 75% chance and Trump’s with 25% 1/2

Then if you’re a Democrat you don’t want him to run even though he’s more likely to help you. In general, if you think you have a high chance of winning, you are probably right to be concerned about throwing a 3rd candidate into the mix. 2/2

It will certainly benefit the PR firms tasked with making him a desirable politician. I have underwear with more charisma than him. A billionaire CEO social liberal running a vanity campaign, gosh, where do I sign up.
