It’s not just a question of who he is likely to help. Imagine as an extreme example that if Shultz did not run, the Democrat would beat Trump with probability 1, and that Schultz would increase the Democrat’s margin with 75% chance and Trump’s with 25% 1/2

Then if you’re a Democrat you don’t want him to run even though he’s more likely to help you. In general, if you think you have a high chance of winning, you are probably right to be concerned about throwing a 3rd candidate into the mix. 2/2
