The Intercept has rescinded and apologized for a clause in its recent article on Tulsi Gabbard which cast as nefarious the fact that many of her donors had "names that are of Hindu origin" (see: https://twitter.com/mtracey/status/1088640579863543809 …). Still a huge, troubling blunder. https://theintercept.com/2019/01/05/tulsi-gabbard-2020-hindu-nationalist-modi/ …pic.twitter.com/5rk5YsA6vu

The article had been up for nearly three weeks before they decided that this incredibly shabby innuendo should be removed. (Shortly after I tweeted about it). Eager to learn more about the editorial process which resulted in this huge blunder.

Agree with this. The clear point of the clause in question was to insinuate that the large number of Hindu donors indicated support from Hindu nationalists, on the basis of nothing more than their names -- in keeping with the core theme of the article.https://twitter.com/RaniaKhalek/status/1089542204098596864 …

I don’t think that explanation is sufficient and also it sounds untrue. I don’t know how else it could be interpreted except to suggest having so many supporters with names of Hindu origin is suspicious given the theme of the article.

The "apology" also doesn't address why the "expert" they "consulted" to conduct an extensive survey of Hindu-sounding names was granted anonymity. Who is this supposed expert, and why was his or her name/affiliation withheld from readers without explanation?pic.twitter.com/A2iOVHOfQQ

Not sure who wrote the apology for Intercept, don't care to know. 'EBay founder and philanthropist Pierre Omidyar provided the funding to launch The Intercept and continues to support it through First Look Media Works, a nonprofit organization.' He's probably pissed! Greenwald?💭

They asked their random Indian friend. But seriously, who needs to call in an 'expert' to determine that?

Laughing Out Loud ~ 'A random Indian friend', that's so funny. But seriously, who needs an expert when they have an announcement to make? They have their donors.

This excerpt doesn't seem to cast a nefarious light on anything. It seems to cast a light on--or just "highlight"--her support from Hindus.

Donors with names of Hindu origin, do they know Hindu is a religion practice in many countries not linked to India. Like saying anyone with a French name is linked to Catholics or France, many Natives Americans and Metis have French name. @theintercept statement is bigotted.
