The Intercept has rescinded and apologized for a clause in its recent article on Tulsi Gabbard which cast as nefarious the fact that many of her donors had "names that are of Hindu origin" (see: https://twitter.com/mtracey/status/1088640579863543809 …). Still a huge, troubling blunder. https://theintercept.com/2019/01/05/tulsi-gabbard-2020-hindu-nationalist-modi/ …pic.twitter.com/5rk5YsA6vu

The article had been up for nearly three weeks before they decided that this incredibly shabby innuendo should be removed. (Shortly after I tweeted about it). Eager to learn more about the editorial process which resulted in this huge blunder.

I don’t think that explanation is sufficient and also it sounds untrue. I don’t know how else it could be interpreted except to suggest having so many supporters with names of Hindu origin is suspicious given the theme of the article.

I agree. The point of the "parenthetical sentence" was to *specifically and intentionally* imply that the large number of Hindu donors indicated affinity with Hindu nationalists. They also don't explain why the "expert" they consulted was mysteriously granted anonymity.

Especially consider the next sentence after that was this: "Gabbard’s ties to Hindu nationalists in the United States run so deep that the progressive newspaper Telegraph India in 2015 christened her the Sangh’s American mascot."

The question for me, and I do have a bias because I support Tulsi, is how is it that in the month or so prior to Tulsi informally announcing was there suddenly a flurry of such articles? Where did they come from? I don't think this is just "convergence".
