The Intercept has rescinded and apologized for a clause in its recent article on Tulsi Gabbard which cast as nefarious the fact that many of her donors had "names that are of Hindu origin" (see: https://twitter.com/mtracey/status/1088640579863543809 …). Still a huge, troubling blunder. https://theintercept.com/2019/01/05/tulsi-gabbard-2020-hindu-nationalist-modi/ …pic.twitter.com/5rk5YsA6vu

The article had been up for nearly three weeks before they decided that this incredibly shabby innuendo should be removed. (Shortly after I tweeted about it). Eager to learn more about the editorial process which resulted in this huge blunder.

Agree with this. The clear point of the clause in question was to insinuate that the large number of Hindu donors indicated support from Hindu nationalists, on the basis of nothing more than their names -- in keeping with the core theme of the article.https://twitter.com/RaniaKhalek/status/1089542204098596864 …

I don’t think that explanation is sufficient and also it sounds untrue. I don’t know how else it could be interpreted except to suggest having so many supporters with names of Hindu origin is suspicious given the theme of the article.

The "apology" also doesn't address why the "expert" they "consulted" to conduct an extensive survey of Hindu-sounding names was granted anonymity. Who is this supposed expert, and why was his or her name/affiliation withheld from readers without explanation?pic.twitter.com/A2iOVHOfQQ

I agree. The point of the "parenthetical sentence" was to *specifically and intentionally* imply that the large number of Hindu donors indicated affinity with Hindu nationalists. They also don't explain why the "expert" they consulted was mysteriously granted anonymity.

Feels good to be right. I was calling that bullshit out immediately. Even wrote the first comment on it under the intercept article. Guess it takes a blue check mark to get any kind of reaction. Thanks for raising the issue Michael.

Guess whomever from the Intercept that edited the article, wouldn't agree, so they just let it roll. 🙄https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Intercept …

We’ve seen how destructive religious bigotry is right here in America. Whether Hindu, Muslim, Buddhist, Christian, atheist—whatever path people have chosen—every one of us must stand up & condemn those who foment bigotry based on religion, race, or gender. https://youtu.be/a0NVcUkO19A

It looks like written by Glenn Beck. Take the example of the quoted H.R. 417. 1) It is sponsored by Rep Joe Pitts - evangelical who explicitly is homophobic. 2) Pitts admitted to have taken $$ from convicted ISI agent https://lancasteronline.com/news/pitts-says-he-was-unaware-of-group-s-alleged-agenda/article_ce3d944b-e251-5de4-be16-2fe127864605.html … Joe Pitts is "progressive" now?
