Massive layoffs at news organizations doing original reporting are not to be celebrated, whatever problems you might have with some of their past reporting. For example, don't conflate all BuzzFeed journalists' work with the one big recent story that has been called into question

Truly good journalists can find work elsewhere if they need it. A trash news org which has had multiple false stories pushed for a narrative should be shut down and sued.

I'm not sure why it would be confusing that the failure of a journalistic outfit with a distinct partisan leaning would be celebrated by other partisans. If Fox News were to do the same, would there not be gloating from the other side? These are the wages of tribalism.

When the press spent the last week digging into the lives of some kids they lied about and kept doubling down as their narrative collapsed layer after layer, yes I will be celebrating the implosion of at least a portion of that putrid industry

Buzzfeed news was/is one of the few orgs doing extreme in-depth investigations exposing wrong doing and corruption in industry and government.

They got caught up chasing the Russia story but their content was about holding the powerful accountable in ways NYT and WaPo never will. It’s a legitimate loss if they’re scaling back significantly.

Sorry.. It's a pattern that has been growing for years. This is NOT a new thing or a Trump Presidency phenomenon. We need new media that understands their role and their importance in our republic. Not media that feels they need to represent a political party or an' agenda'

Are you claiming only a minority of work coming out of places like BuzzFeed is ideologically biased? Journalism is only useful to society when those practicing it have the mental skill to leave their opinions at home.

I don’t trust ANY large news organization, none, zero! I like local media to gain strength again. Those are always most reliable.

And the crux of this thread is that’s the real worry. I’m less concerned about the national players or a lot of the digital-first operations. We are on the cusp of a country full of news deserts, medium and small communities with no newspaper to watch those in power.

Michael, journalism today is very limited in scoop, agenda driven, partisan and frankly very boring. I can count good original reporters on one hand.
