right, people have to take that stuff seriously. It can be pretty amusing, flaming radicals of the left and right carefully following bureaucratic tax code laws.
The American Conservative hosted a symposium in 2016 in which contributors (including me) stated the candidates they supported or opposed. Tax code violation?

It's an argument for why socialists and "progressives" should quit playing around and back Bernie in the 2020 primary.
I'd guess one of his opponents made some sort of threat or complaint & publisher consulted the lawyer and took the cautious route. My experience is that, if the question ever comes up, everyone goes cautious.
