Just saw THEY SHALL NOT GROW OLD -- astounding restored footage from World War I. Definitely see if you get a chance.

reading about WW1 in high school got me hooked on History. All 3 of my kids when they are age appropriate will be reading about the great war
-
WWI was one of the big subjects I studied in high school too, in European History class.

So many lives destroyed, all for nothing. The ultimate rich man's war, paid for with the lives of the working class with nothing in return for anyone.

It's an important film. Seeing these young(and old) men going off to fight and what they endured-both in the war and when they got back is tragic. Really gets to the class roots of war, poor young men sent off to kill other poor young men.
-
This war crossed socioeconomic boundaries and wiped out the sons of the rich ( the officers) and the poor, and a generation of men in between.

It’s a cliche, but these men really came to life. The realism is astounding. Big kudos to Jackson.

Really interesting how the national propaganda machine swept them up in a conflict they knew nothing about, and then upon their return the country as a whole largely didn't care about them.

Here’s a link to 9 First World War poets. (I read ‘The Dead’ by Rupert Brooke at my dad’s funeral. It’s so beautiful). I’m reading a book of poetry by Miklos Radnoti a Jewish man who died in WWII For some reason my favourite books & movies are about warhttps://www.iwm.org.uk/history/9-poets-of-the-first-world-war …
