As an American-born person with a Jamaican father, she's an American of African descent. Thus, African American. I'm confused why you're confused.

OK, thanks for the answer.

Do you also wonder why people of European ancestry call themselves American?

I’m an Irish American because I trace my ancestry to Ireland, my home country. African Americans are Americans who trace their ancestry to Africa. Obama is not an African American by your ‘exclusive’ definition. Why the need to exclude and create an artificial heirachy?

It sounds suspiciously like saying the Mayflower immigrants are the top tier ones, while later multicultural immigrants are less than them. I’ve never heard anyone exclude Americans with African heritage based on if their ancestry included slaves.
