Teenage boys in large groups often tend to behave cruelly. It's no excuse -- they should be reprimanded and made to understand why what they did was wrong -- but the scene itself is really familiar. Just happens to have a political overtone in this instance.

Why are you so reluctant to use the words "racist" and "racism" to describe racist acts?

Why are you so insistent on imputing some kind of intention to absolve racism? There is absolutely no way to fair-mindedly read my tweet in such a manner.

The taunting of the Native American elder was clearly racist, juvenile, and all-around pathetic. I just hope the teens responsible can be reprimanded in a considered, constructive way that doesn't further encourage their bad tendencies.

The scene is familiar, but it's not happenstance why those kids were there. They were there because of political reasons. They were behaving that way because of their political beliefs. Their political beliefs are born of & permeated with racism. You can't separate them.

They were also there because adults brought them there — adults with a duty of care to prevent this sort of behavior. That’s where the politics are.

A mob of teenage boys all wearing a uniform yelling at an “other” in the streets. Yeah, it’s just a little political.

Ah hun, that is such a bad take. This wasn't "boys being boys", this was racist harassment of an elder and a veteran no less. Adults were there and chaperones, who let this go on. This is taught behavior at school and at home, so who is going to teach them?

Tonight my son and 15 guy friends competed in a mock pageant at their HS and raised over $5000 for Make a Wish. Stop justifying this behavior. It is NOT the normal tendency for teen boys to act as racist bullies.

In my opinion, we venture precariously close to ages-old “boys will be boys” apologist territory with these types of comparisons which have enabled mob-like and systematic oppression of others throughout history. It should be very worrisome that this scene is so “familiar”.

It’s not a political overtone. It’s a moral one. Their milieu has taught them they are superior and there are others, beneath them, whom they can treat how they please.
