BuzzFeed certainly had real sources; they didn't just fabricate. But some of the greatest debacles in journalistic history have involved reporters giving excessive credulity to sources who had incentive to deceptively characterize sensitive material. (See: Judith Miller, WMDs)

Michael, when a company employee does something bad he is almost always fired. Many of these leaks have not harmed the reputation of journalists or has them fired. Don't you not think journalism has a problem of not punishing bad actors?

The best way to manipulate people is by telling them what they want to hear.

At this point it wouldn't surprise me if it all turns out to be *mostly* true. Has Trump directed Cohen to lie before to provide cover, yes. Does Trump hold Congress in any high regard, probably not.

That's one of the biggest problems with the Russia Story. Journalists know Trump is crooked so who really cares if they get the facts straight. The bigger issue for me is why no one cares about the thousands of similar crooks who don't have the audacity to run for President.

The sad thing about Russiagate is that there is a real story there about sleazy lobbying...and if we could address that, it would help our democracy...but the whole Russian xenophobia hysteria is another danger on top of the sleazy lobbying.

Nobody knows who is lying and who isn't at this point. People are rushing to conclusions right now without any hard evidence.

If Mueller is lying here he would be damaging his credibility with republicans who are actually going to decide if Trump should be removed from office. They'll point to this statement, and the contradiction, as proof of his perfidy, say he can't be trusted, etc. Why do that?

I appreciate your conscientiousness. Now please don't be so naive. Judith Miller was not a dupe; she was an intentional agent of disinfo & a traitor working for hostile parties seeking war. Point of her lies was to create pretext for invasion.

The concern... Mueller's unprecedented denial was panic reflex to preserve case integrity on other charges. Why else get involved? Does not compute for me.

The most emblematic sentence in the article was: IF TRUE. I mean if they didn't even know fo sure while writing then why to put out there a story with such gravity?

Actually, Michael, I would characterize what Leopold and Cormier did as "willingly participate in the fabrication." They didn't care if evidence existed, they liked the story. When you're a so-called journalist and you don't care about facts or evidence, you're a fiction writer.

Or a liar (which Leopold clearly is). Did he see the evidence? Cormier says he didn't. Obviously Cormier has some residual brainstem activity that makes him pretend he has integrity. Those neurons died in Leopold long ago.
