The lack of skepticism, especially skepticism of people you agree with, along with a lack of deep understanding of subject matter and the lack of time to confirm information independently before publication are very real problems.

We need a “free and independent press,” not a biased, free to be unaccountable press.

I'd argue it started before Trump. It's dredged the lagoon in near unison since he was elected but it's been an institution of rumormongers and sycophants for a good while. Exceptions exist but it's largely an institution in it's death throes. We are suffering for it

Agreed. It doesn’t help that most (90%?) of the media has chosen a tribe and sees it as their job to bolster that tribe and tear down the other, ethics and fairness and truth be damned. And they will beclown themselves repeatedly in the process, and don’t seem to care.

The fact that they are there own echo chamber and are driven by agenda instead of seeking the truth and they will NOT police their own. There are good ones but you have to look for them.

1) The media is just the tail. The far end. 2) It's not "horrible for democracy"; this is a consequence of that "democracy". Which is NOT what people presume, and vanishingly few ever think correctly about. 3) There is something catastrophically wrong with CULTURE right now.
-
Culture is a big issue right now not just in the US. Europe is going through a huge one with the massive migrants that have swept through Europe. For US, what kind of culture are we going for. Culture it seems is almost as big as the political divide right now.
