Tulsi Gabbard is being introduced to the wider public almost exclusively as an "apologist" for Assad. Other criticisms may be valid, but this central attack is baseless and epitomizes the worst kind of de-legitimizing tactics. By taking that trip, Gabbard exposed herself to extreme political risk, knowing how cynically and maliciously it would inevitably be portrayed. Which is more that can be said for most politicians. Again: some lines of criticisms are perfectly reasonable. But this smear is odious.

I’m Syrian American. Went to same medical school as Assad. I don’t agree with all of his policies but he has way more dignity than most politicians in the US. I’m not his friend, but I have known him well enough. The smearing against him is part of the regime-change BS.

Other criticisms to do with her religious identification are not valid either.
