The most common word being associated with Tulsi right now in the media is "Assad," usually followed by "apologist," "defender," or in @clairecmc's case, "bestie." That's why it's necessary to focus on the insidiousness of this smear, notwithstanding other (reasonable) concerns

I interviewed both Tulsi and Dennis Kucinich (who accompanied her on the Syria trip) shortly after they returned in early 2017, as the quotes in the above column demonstrate. And I will be writing more on the subject, because it's important. If you don't like it, tough.

By taking that trip, Gabbard exposed herself to extreme political risk, knowing how cynically and maliciously it would inevitably be portrayed. Which is more that can be said for most politicians. Again: some lines of criticisms are perfectly reasonable. But this smear is odious.

Waiting for Neera Tanden and Kristol to declare that Tulsi is opposed to our “shared values” and that the Ghost of MadMcCain will curse Tulsi. Bloody Frauds. By their enemies shall Ye know them

actually, i think she’s being introduced to the wider public mostly as an apologist for modi, which she undeniably is...

I've mostly seen stuff about her older homophobia and Assad myself

The fact that the Clinton dead-enders are this shrill and this early is a clear indication of who represents any actual threat to the status quo.

Hey Michael, why do you think so many on the Left have came out so hard against Tulsi Gabbard? What is it specifically about her that has made her the 1 they've deliberately attacked amongst their own candidates? I disagree w/ most of her politics, but I find her to be genuine.
-
She didn’t toe the line about “the primary wasn’t biased against Bernie” and she smacked down 2 party stalwarts on their anti-catholic bigotry. I’d imagine they are afraid of having a candidate with integrity as integrity and toeing the party line aren’t always the same.

I think they smear her because unlike Trump she could actually break up the establishment. I'm a supporter of Tulsi, and Indo have concerns about her stance on torture and drone strikes, but the Assad Apologist smear is honestly just the most blatantly dishonest.

Indeed, vox, etc., Have also been ripping into her Dharma devotion.

If Obama opposes the Iraq war does he become apologist for Saddam? The pro war media of US wants everyone to keep killing Children and to make anyone anti war into a pariah . Simply money in their pockets, at the cost of killing innocent children

But the Syria issue masks more troubling roots. Her connections to Modi/BJP, combined with her 2015 speech to the Armageddon lobby (AKA John Hagee's Christians United for Israel) reveal a deeply anti-Muslim POV.
