Agree on the larger point but in the case of Jeb and Christie specifically the 2016 election destroyed their brands.

It destroyed Jeb brand but not really Christie. Christie brand was destroyed by Bridge gate trials independent of the election. In fact he performed well with that New Hampshire viral drug addiction speech and his owning of Rubio in a debate. Jeb was totally emasculated by Trump
