The election-industrial complex is so lucrative (and broken) that there’s every incentive for all these people to run, and very little downside. It’s why *George Pataki* ran in 2016. “Former presidential candidate” is a great label for “brand-building”https://twitter.com/natesilver538/status/1085553972428054528 …

It's also becoming clear how little of a deterrent effect the traditional frontrunners (Biden, Bernie), and to some extent also the nontraditional ones (Harris, Warren, Beto), are having on the field. Nobody's intimidated by anybody and pretty much everybody is running.

Some may ask: "Didn't the 2016 campaign blemish people like Christie and Jeb?" Answer: whatever else occurred, they raised their national profiles -- which results in media gigs, book deals, high speaking fees, a national network of supporters, and so forth. So it all worked out.

Really? Have Chris Christie, Jeb Bus and Marco Rubio come out looking better after the 2016 primary campaign?

"Better" is distinct from "high-profile" for the purposes of brand-building. Christie just published a book that will undoubtedly sell well. Check their speaking fees.

They all want to be a VP, a cabinet member or have their own full hour show on a cable news channel. What ever happened to Pataki and Jindal?

Eh, I'm not sure about this. Is anyone *more impressed with George Pataki after his 2016 run? Seems like he just embarrassed himself. Same with Huckabee, Jeb. Then there's someone like Lindsey Graham, for whom it was a wash. Still, you could luck out like Ben Carson.

You sound upset that Bernie will be revealed as the terrible candidate he is once he has to stand aside a wider selection. Sorry...but Bernie "looking good" because you limit the field to Bernie and the worst Democratic Party candidate in history is a once in a lifetime chance
