In past decades, the FBI has expanded its power, reach, and ability to veto democratic will by aligning with putatively "liberal" causes, which resulted in liberal politicians rushing to its defense. The consequence was a greatly expanded, quasi-autonomous surveillance state.

Hubert Humphrey, for instance, was a leading proponent of empowering FBI to root out "subversives" and stifle worrisome political trends. FBI needed this validation to justify expansion. Dems cheering dramatic FBI over-reach because it seems "anti-Trump" play a similar role today

Not to say the FBI doesn’t have reactionary/conservative elements. Of course it does. But in order to acquire the political cover necessary to expand its surveillance powers, it has historically staked out alliances at the leadership level with prominent liberal figures & causes

I highly recommend this book for additional context; its focus is on the 50s and 60s, a period when liberal validation greatly accelerated the FBI empowering itself to become an arbiter of which political views constitute "national security threats"https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0691607222/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01__o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 …

This is nonsense. I went to a regional director’s kid’s wedding and he was such a conservative hack he made an appallingly gay marriage joke during the father of the bride speech. Agent lean right, generally, like Comey.

I would also add that one of my best friends growing up’s Dad was a high-ranking FBI agent who leaned conservative but knew Obama as a child in Hawaii so he became more left-leaning upon leaving the Bureau. @mtracey is wrong.

The same FBI that had files on MLK and John Lennon! The same FBI that had such strong pro-Trump biases in the NY offices that Comey felt compelled to reopen and explain the Hillary email case! Yeah, okay

This is weird since the majority of FBI agents lean right. And perhaps, one side of the political spectrum tries to help all Americans rather than themselves, their donors and hostile foreign nations, and the FBI is aware of this subversion of our democracy.

False equivalency. The FBI's surveillance of Trump was based on material evidence that he SPECIFICALLY was credibly acting, at least in part, as the agent of a hostile foreign government. This has zero equivalency to blanket surveillance of groups with "subversive" ideology.

The fact that they opened an investigation into Trump since they didn't like his Russia stance really tells you how unaccountable they are.

The FBI was very anti Clinton, especially the NY office. That is not to say they condone conspiracy with a foreign power. Their right wing bias has its limits.

“Surveillance” state was Dubya’s Patriot Act. In every other imaginable sense of the word, we have Big Brothered our damnselves. The FBI are cops. And cops are known white male supremacists, generally.
