Just a word of advice to conservatives: you might want to develop rebuttals to Democratic Socialism that don't rely on hackneyed Venezuela comparisons, because that'll get real old, real quick

Scandinavia is not socialist it has private ownership of capital and financing of investment via capital markets. You can ask what the actual socialist countries, like CSSR, thought of Sweden -- we all considered it a capitalist country.
-
These people that think that as soon as you have paid maternity leave you become a socialist country are tiresome on both the right and left. Did you know Sweden has legions of for profit charter schools? Billionaires? Privately owned Companies listed on global stock exchanges?

That’s a myth used in North America to sell socialism. They’re not socialist. Just sayin’ .Central control/planning of any kind, socialism or communism, leads to rampant corruption and mass death to humans and their environment. The closest contemporary is technocratic China.
-
I wouldn't call china democratic. China does have large numbers of State Owned Enterprises, but they at least compete for funding from banks. In reality, debts are often forgiven, but even that partial competition is enough to drive productivity gains over their Mao baseline.

Scandavians could go for either a true anarchic society or a true Communist society and be fine while America's overarching culture is not well suited to sustain large social wellfare programs or central planning. Less is more for us. Our gov is a better referee than a caretaker.

Taleb often says things that sound reasonable until you think about them. Most people never get to step 2. What he is talking about are areas of concern and redistribution, but socialism is about _govt_ ownership of capital, so it doesn't make sense to be socialist at the X level

Scandinavia isn’t a country. Norway’s GDP is lower than Walmart’s annual revenue. Its national defense is insufficient. It is being hit hard by the decrease in petroleum prices as this makes up nearly 25% of GDP.

Sweden had problems in the 1980s, yes, it started down the path of socialism by having unions buy up shares of firms. It reversed course.

Scandinavia is not a country. Also market economies. Also homogenous White postage stamp countries with very little in common to US. I’m all for adopting their healthcare, the rest is probably not transferable.

The policies pushed by the dem-soc crowd have very, very little to do with Scandinavia.
