You can't discuss this honestly without getting into the 15-year period when "civil unions" was the Democratic compromise stance. When Obama was supporting civil unions, Gabbard -- already a young legislator -- was attacking "the homosexual agenda."https://twitter.com/DavidKlion/status/1085181005005316096 …

Obama's expediency put him in the place to stop defending DOMA and eventually appoint judges who dismantled state anti-gay marriage laws. Not sure what Gabbard's did.

Yes: Gabbard's views as a teen and young adult appear to have been an extension of her upbringing, and probably harmed her politically. Which suggests *less* in the way of expedience than Obama. (That's not a rationalization, it's a comparative description.)

You can throw the “political expediency” term around till you’re blue in the face. Your favorite supported changing gay people to straight as an adult politician. This was well outside of the norm for mainstream Dems and can’t be defended by invoking mainstream Dems.

Obama may have "opposed" marriage equality, he also opposed all bills that would have actually banned it. He never supported or voted for an anti-LGBT bill. Gabbard advocated against marriage equality and FOR the suicide-inducing evil that is "reparative therapy".
