The widely-circulated @jacobinmag article declaring "Tulsi Gabbard Is Not Your Friend" contains at least one giant error. It says she "vigorously" opposed the Iran Deal. In fact, she voted in favor of a September 2015 resolution supporting the Iran Deal. Retraction needed?pic.twitter.com/zxDAudBezK

I wrote the piece. I think it's fair to point this out, and I will look into it and update the piece as appropriate. But you owe it to your followers to not just pretend the below wasn't in the article, the basis for the claim you're highlightingpic.twitter.com/tBAW1u8jGA

Thanks for the reply. You're right that she voiced concerns about the Iran Deal, which could be reasonably characterized as "skepticism" -- but not "vigorous opposition," considering she voted for the resolution approving it. This was all public when your piece was published.

"Skepticism" is extremely generous. She compared it to Munich and said it was like making "the same mistake" with North Korea, both classic right-wing talking points. She even attended Netanyahu's speech.

Those are all fair things to point out, but it has to be said that the passage I highlighted is flagrantly misleading -- if not outright false. You said she "vigorously opposed" something she voted to approve. Again, this was public information when the piece was published.

This is ultimately going to be a question of semantics, but I think those words are entirely appropriate, given her public criticism of the deal. She did vote for it, but those right-wing talking points helped unravel the deal in the end

It's not semantics. You can't say she "vigorously opposed" something that she voted to approve. That's a factual matter, and goes well beyond semantics.

Yeah you can. She did oppose it (I would argue, given the inflammatory language towards it, that she did so "vigorously") for months. She ultimately voted in favour of it when the politics around it changed. And she still insisted it wasn't good.https://mauitime.com/news/politics/u-s-rep-tulsi-gabbard-explains-why-she-supports-iran-nuclear-agreement/ …

Tracey is quite correct. “Opposed” means one specific thing for a Congressional rep. Gabbard, despite “vigorously trash-talking” the Iran deal, supported it. It’s not just semantic.
