Can't recommend Kelefa Sanneh's profile of Gabbard highly enough tonight. It's hard to know where to begin with her.https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2017/11/06/what-does-tulsi-gabbard-believe …

What Democratic voters are going to want in 2020 is a candidate who used to attack "homosexual extremists," regularly went on Fox to criticize Obama for not taking "radical Islam" seriously, defended Assad, was considered for a job working for Trump, and is also in a cult maybe.

Can you point to a specific quote where she "defended Assad" that could not also be reasonably construed as "seeking a diplomatic resolution to the Syrian crisis that incorporates Assad"?

I think casting doubt on Assad's responsibility for chemical weapons attacks counts, personally.

I don't think expressing skepticism about unproven assessments by intelligence agencies, especially when they're used as the basis for retaliatory military strikes, should earn one the title of a dictator's "defender." It's a tired trope with a bad historyhttps://twitter.com/mtracey/status/1083881844729413634 …

Tulsi Gabbard "defended Assad" in the same way that people who sought a diplomatic resolution in Iraq "defended Saddam," or critics of regime change in Libya "defended Gaddafi." The list goes on, and on, and on. It's the same tired, mindlessly-repeated, 100% bogus talking point.

My take on this is that it's actually quite easy to oppose intervention while also not denying that a thing that probably happened -- and was later unsurprisingly proven to have happened by international orgs and the UN -- probably happened.

My take is that it's usually prudent to profess skepticism of claims set forth by the government (in this case, the Trump Administration) as justification for military action. And that's what she did.https://twitter.com/CNN/status/850477149895131136 …
