The supreme weirdness of this partial shutdown. Look at Trump proposal. Replacing aging fence, enforcement, agents, beds, medical, high-tech drug detection. A package that, absent Trump, majority would support.

Has the 60 vote threshold suddenly vanished? I must've missed that.

Bet he mistakenly believed it was a home run, suitable to stash away until the opportunity to look like a bipartisan dealmaker

He ain't that sophisticated. He doesn't really care about the wall. He does care if someone hurts his ego. Limbaugh mocking him for signing the CR made him angry that he looked weak. So he refused to sign and thought dems would cave immediately and he'd be a hero.

The wall bill passed the House in December when the GOP was still in control, but it is being blocked by Dems in the Senate.

Please provide the House and Senate Bill numbers. If this happened you should have no issue providing them.

So you think
@TheDemocrats would have given at least 10 yes votes in the Senate for the last 2 years but suddenly now they won’t? That’s weird.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

He needed to first focus on the “easiest” big win which was the massive tax cuts which would turbo-charge economic growth. Then failed healthcare reform chewed up much time. And the midterm result brought us to the wall showdown:https://www.rollcall.com/news/politics/trump-predicts-deal-making-many-fights-ahead-democrats …

Why did the reiblicana have to go outside of the party establishment in the first place? You seem to have it backwards. It isn’t Trump that is the west issue in DC.

Either he’s 4D chessing Dems into making idiotic excuses for not funding more wall or, more likely, he assumed he’d be able to negotiate with them.

Probably because Ryan didn't want him to, and he didn't want to get in a war with his own party. Few Presidents do.

The GOP-e's donors want cheap labor so it would have been a fight with them too, but Trump had other issues to work with them: taxes, confirmations, etc. There was more of a downside to going to war with them. Dems will 'resist' anything Trump so this battle makes sense.
