Trump's initial withdrawal order directly contradicted Bolton's earlier public pronouncements on Syria. He has also undermined Pompeo, and before that Tillerson, on the same subject. Clearly he rebuffed Mattis. So there is no unified administration policy -- maybe by design.

Trump said today the Syria withdrawal is "going quickly" (whatever that may mean) while Bolton declared "conditions" that could make it go exceedingly slowly or never happen at all. So what's actually happening? (Also note Trump's casual expression of willingness to meet w/ Iran)pic.twitter.com/35V7VZFyv1

The establishment freakout over the Syria withdrawal has, perversely, made Bolton out to be the "reasonable" one by default, even though Bolton's foreign policy positions (such as favoring indefinite US military presence in Syria) are insane.

Not that this would've been hard to guess, but there is strong evidence that Bolton, Pompeo, and others have been pursuing their own agendas without Trump's approval. (Although Trump bears ultimate responsibility for appointing them in the first place) https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/national-security/they-can-do-what-they-want-trumps-iran-comments-defy-the-position-of-his-top-aides/2019/01/03/86a69d56-0f71-11e9-84fc-d58c33d6c8c7_story.html?utm_term=.c9753461b962 …pic.twitter.com/Ubq3RfXExW

The Deep State, which almost entirely neocon, tries to do so with every president. Nothing new.

I’ll agree with you that they went out on a limb & when this happens, he tends to get out the axe. His foreign policy advisors have not been working in concert w/ him but the whole lot are belligerent.

Either he made these appointments ignorantly, under threat or he’s changed his mind. A reporter should ask him which. His answer would probably not be truthful but might be revealing.

Trump's choices in staff are 1) experienced insiders who will undermine him, 2) inexperienced outsiders who can't get anything done, 3) tiny number of young Hill staffers who agree and have experience, but who are insufficient to staff the WH...he should have combined 2 & 3

Not at all sure what posessed him to appoint Bolton in the first place. Here's hoping for another 'You're Fired', and soon!

Or like Trump has said all along- he won't tell you his plans so his team keeps you confused.

Obama had these same issues... but maybe they were better staying on message?? OR Trump knows (no matter who he puts in) a majority are for staying in Syria.. So he has to reinforce his mission-BUT he better get out real soon before another “chemical attack” draws us back in!
