Maddow wove an elaborate 20 minute theory last night postulating that Trump's "odd riff" on the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan was actually evidence that unknown Russian officials are "stovepiping" propaganda through Trump. She called on the new Dem House to investigate this.

She strongly insinuated (never outright declares of course, but there's no need) that the only explanation for Trump's comment, as well as a handful of other comments over the past two years, was that Trump is actively compromised by Russian military intelligence.

Maddow knows her market. Lots of highly engaged Democrats have totally gone off the deep end on the Russia topic.

She is fully invested in the conspiracy theory that Russia hired a group of hackers to run $100k worth of Facebook ads that would somehow swing a national election. Now she is left to defend this theory with such statements that serve to lower the bar of reality even further

No it was $4700 worth of ads across the whole Google platform that swung it.

So Russia took over the world and their first order of business is convincing everyone that their invasion of Afghanistan was a good move?

It's like some odd form of group PTSD. Honestly, it reminds me of the situation after 9/11; a lot of people (uni students, in my personal 9/11-era experience) were in such a state of shock that their critical thinking skills shut off & they bought whatever swill the media dished.

Rachel Maddow's Jan 1, 2019 episode in 60 seconds: Potemkin Cabinet Meeting. What's fascinating here is the neo-McCarthyist narrative after two years of daily repetition still borrows so heavily from the 1950s Red Scare. Putin is always framed as the USSR. pic.twitter.com/vnednFpntE

She's probably right though. But congress should not waste time on it, because who cares. He channels Fox News and Alex Jones all the time.

She was wrong. There was no invasion, the Afghans invited the Soviets to save them from fascists. Soviets held off until after Carter armed the fascists through Operation Cyclone and after the largely theocratic Iranian Revolution also made possible by US: 1953 Iranian coup.
