I don't know what reforms could actually shorten/truncate American presidential election cycles, but the absurd length of these things is a huge problem and only seems to be getting worse. Consumes way too much of national political consciousness and generally makes people crazy.

Maybe make the Executive less powerful, and thus less important? Crazy idea, I know.

Just more evidence of there being way too much power in the presidency.

Considering HRC spent 2 billion dollars in 2016, it won’t stop and actually projected to increase. It’s big business, not just politics

Remove political advertising and I think you will see that cycle shrink quite a bit. Wild conjecture and character slamming makes too much money for what remains of the media not to go overtime.

Earned media would still remain huge which is the issue of consumption of national dialogue. To project a message of why 1 person should govern an extremely diverse and geographically scattered population of 300 million requires lots of planning and message broadcasting.

It’s the 24-hour news cycle that makes it seem so long. They keep churning out nonsense, and it’s that nonsense which is tiring. Maddow and Russiagate are equally annoying.

Other democracies pass laws limiting the actual period for campaigning. Americans need to get their presidential campaigns out of the hands of TV executives. Just refuse to watch it. Would also help if news orgs dismantled their polling operations, and left that to universities.

It is meant to wear people down to the point where they give up, which is a positive for the status quo.
