Michael, what is your opinion on the "we must protect the Kurds" argument? I personally am concerned for the Kurds, but don't know enough to know if this rationale is legit.

It isn't legitimate, it's concern trolling, meant to keep US presence in place. If the Kurd objection didn't exist, or if withdrawal were undergone in a manner that safeguarded the Kurds, something else would arise as an obstacle to leaving.

This notion of Syria as some sort of gift to Russian and Iran is absurd. If anything, it’s a gift from hell.

Imagine having to balance every regional power's individual interest (oil - prod, price,etc.), rebuilding several hundred billion in infrastructure damage, dealing with pop resettlement & the quagmire caused by the multitude of sectarian, ethnic factions in the ME as a "gift".
