Just want to point out for posterity that making this observation (with the caveat that Trump was never some anti-war purist, and has also dropped a large quantity of bombs in pre-existing warzones) provoked several years of relentless trolling from elements of the Online Left

Furthermore, making these observations never necessitated "supporting Trump," despite constant allegations of such. It's descriptive, not prescriptive. And either way, you can support discrete initiatives without supporting the whole. That's always been the case.

I supported some things Obama did (declining to send lethal arms to Ukraine) and opposed others (launching illegal war in Syria) but for some reason this never brought forth allegations of being a wholesale "Obama supporter." Although I did vote and campaign for him in 2008

How does militarizing the border and suggesting he'd like to give troops their the right to shoot migrants fit into this?
-
The border has already been militarized, at least big parts of it, for years. So I wouldn't say that marginally increasing militarization on some parts of US territory meaningfully detracts from my point, although certainly it's a legitimate issue. Just separate from my point.

If the choice is between nationalism and an internationalism of, by, and for multi-national corporations, then nationalism is at least a stumbling block that can impede the greater enemy. I'd much prefer those two camps fight it out while we build a human-based internationalism.
-
There’s a reason the media hypes up nationalism as the great evil, and ignores corporate internationalism.

Good thread here and a lot of good opinions. I actually found myself agreeing to points from both sides of the debate rather than rolling my eyes at both sides of the debate.

People reflexively “resist” him, not understanding that he’s a moderate/liberal on some issues and unorthodox on many. There are opportunities for *both sides* in this presidency (see prison reform). If he veers your way on an issue (LIKE ENDING WARS), encourage it.

Trump's ability to upset the media is good enough, observing them on election night is like dark comedy. He is really trying at times, but the system won't allow someone to change it that easily. It has its own inertia and changes only when it crashes or through revolution.

We try too hard to justify perspectives about the moral trajectory of a trump foreign policy. any good that comes of it is nothing more than unintended consequences.

I assume you are not surprised Michael. Our country (& people who troll social media in particular) is riddled with people who can't see past partisanship. That intense partisanship is based on a handful of issues that the ruling class has used to polarize & motivate us.

Are you serious? Trump has been itching for war with Iran and has made this clear in his public statements. Saudi Arabia is one of the main culprits leading him on and Bolton - the *War Hawk* is in the White House.
