Opponents of the withdrawals claim they’re for “stability,” but there’s nothing less stable than maintaining multiple interminable military occupations all over the world. That’s a *source* of instability, and creates countless additional political problems, domestically & abroad

Exactly. They take it as a given that the US *should* have troops all over the place. It is a normal state of affairs for them that needs no justification. In reality, the onus is on them to explain why we are even there in the first place.

Phased withdrawal. Kurdification. We will stand down when the Kurds stand up and are properly trained. Just exchange South Vietnamese for Kurd and we heard it all before.

I just finished a course on US policy-making during Vietnam, and this was the analogy I was thinking of. The great mistake in Vietnam was making it *our* problem. We have learned nothing.

Why this rage??? There is ALWAYS nuances. It always matters how you leave. To me that is the problem here. You leave a military engament by a tweet!!!! Not informing allies, not protecting the Kurds you made do the dirty job on the ground. Who will stand by the US another time???

You made a decision to go in. You shift a powerbalance. That makes you responsible for getting out right. No one wants to do anything with the US after this. You are not regarded as a mature, dependable country after this. A Dane who really likes your country

I wish the interventionists that advocate doing troop withdrawals the "right way" would admit that they have absolutely no idea what a troop withdrawal done the right way would look like.

Ultimately, there should be a withdrawal. However withdrawal by tweet is hardly the way to go about assuring stability. Additionally, his motives regarding the Russians and Turks are questionable. It's not about doing what's right. He's exerting power because he's losing control.

Great post, Michael. Was thinking about that earlier. Establishment has us locked into this global network of wars and simple military presence. Is this it for all time. Has this made us any safer??

Ask the question: in which instances are the US military forces creating or enhancing or enabling a positive result for populations. Be honest.
