The process complaints about the Syria withdrawal are hollow. Had Trump followed a normal bureaucratic process, is there any doubt withdrawal would've been stymied, and likely blocked? Virtually everyone in the "natsec" apparatus is against it. The "process" is itself the problem

Michael, I’d be interested in a thread from you about the merits of pulling out Syria instead of critiquing the critiques of the decision.

Exactly right. The "follow the process" mentality is why we are still in Afghanistan after nearly 20 @#$% years! It's long over for us, there; everyone know it. "The Process" traps us, there.

Discussion about "process" is dishonestly intended to keep troops there as long as possible or forever. There is no plan to remove the troops the right way, no one is coming up with one. No Democratic or Republican alternative to Trump is going to create one.

Same as the idiotic "tone" arguments. They're invariably a way to deflect without addressing the content of the message - and "tone" and "process" whines are invariably used when the whiner's bitch cannot really stand up to scrutiny - cannot stand on its own actual merits.

I'm sure to some degree you're right, however poor process in the @BarackObama pullout of Iraq is in large part what left room for and led to the rise of ISIS in the first place. A circumspect withdrawal is not a bad idea.

Pulling troops out of Iraq did not create ISIS. Invading Iraq created ISIS. Overthrowing Saddam Hussein created ISIS. The agent that created the problem can in no way be trusted to solve the problem.

I am sympathetic to that argument; God knows we’ve seen the problem is with bureaucratic resistance a lot recently. But it’s always worth considering the bureaucrats are sometimes right.

The bureaucrats may be right about Syria, but at some point a government of the people comes down to bureaucrats carrying out the orders of elected officials. If the bureaucrats want to be in charge, they can always run for election. Else why bother with elections?

Eventually we’ll just occupy the entire world, and if we decide to relinquish some tiny pacific island it’ll be viewed something that will inevitably doom America.

That's a lazy argument, since it ASSUMES you are right and entire NatSec establishment is wrong. To justify it, you have to say what will happen IN SYRIA and the region as a result of this pullout. Or you have to say impact on region is irrelevant and you only care about US.

This is undoubtedly correct. In fact, although the resignations are a promising sign it's really going to happen, even now it's possible to doubt it. That apparatus is still there, so a technical delay or 'new facts on the ground' could yet intervene.

Also to put it in context he tried to pull out of Syria 8 months ago, Mattis asked for a one year wait, Trump said 6 months, now it has 60-100 days to pull out so very close time frame to what Mattis wanted except his plan was probably to keep trying to expand the time frame.
