I remember when pundits said the Ted Cruz-orchestrated government shutdown in 2013 would doom the GOP. Instead it vaulted Cruz into national prominence and the GOP won the senate. Nobody, aside from perhaps federal workers, cares that much about government shutdowns.

Funny, I actually had to do the same thing during one of the shutdowns in January.

And federal workers, who aren’t bamboozled by the hype, don’t care much either.

I think it was just the fact that a shutdown was a tangible display of government's dysfunction that could more or less be directly attributed to one political party. It's not really a novelty any more and I think the consensus now is that both are at fault

It's usually the lower-grade workers who get rooked here, though. You know, the ones who actually work for a living. They should have demanded Congress hand THEIR pay to those folks, since they can't seem to do the job they're paid to do.

The news in my country will bring it as a disaster for every American again. Worried faces, sad violins, the skies falling down.

Indeed fed shutdowns would bring us the closest to (temporarily) experiencing Milton Friedman's libertarian small gov ideals !
