And I don't mean "coalition" here as in the voters. I mean the Washington institutional elements (Congress, think tanks, military) which support the administration in various capacities.

I also don't mean this in the cable news, "walls are closing in" sense. Just that the nature of Trump's governing operation has shifted, to a degree more significant than any personnel development prior to today.

I think it has less to do with Mattis and more to do with the reasons Mattis left. If this Syria/Afghan withdrawal happens, it will be Trump's first real victory over the Deep State war machine, and that makes GOP establishment types nervous.
-
It also makes the left the new left that is nervous too they love war

Neocons being upset about getting out of wars is nothing new.....actually, it's what everyone expected them to do

They'll try to slide some Bolton acolyte into DoD, it seems unavoidable, unless that whole wing shears right off the coalition. Kinda most interested in what Bolton's next move is
-
Word is hes on the way out also. When Mattis left they said another person with views similar to his would be leaving as well.

I have a great deal of respect for mattis as a man and a leader but not so much for America's foreign policy in my lifetime.

Something the media would never think of asking Mattis- “what conditions do you need to support withdrawal in Syria”? They won’t ask because he can’t answer- He did his job there and now supports doing more, classic mission creep. He should know better.

We will certainly get to see what happens to a president who gives the deep state the finger if he really does plan to exit all/most of these BS military "conflicts". Will we actually see Congress declare war in places like Syria? I'm hoping we'll find out.

Lol thinking the GOP machine will do anything other than say they’re disappointed with the Mattis situation.

What is interesting to see is the difference in the responses of GOP's bought-by-corporate members of Congress & GOP regular folks to the war withdrawals. Lib response interesting too. Reg. folks = Yay! GOP Bought Bunch = But Kurds! But Putin! Libs = Russia runs USA

Oh both absolutely would. Pence and Bolton are peas in a pod on foreign policy. Only Pence sees Middle East wars as inevitable fulfillment of Biblical prophesy that validates his beliefs& that should be embraced.

McConnell probably did not vote 4 Trump but they warmed to each other over some shared goals. Now, status quo ante.
