Seriously, the historical significance here has to be emphasized. Senior cabinet officials don't resign under these circumstances (opposition to withdrawing military forces). Or at least, I cannot think of a precedent.

I don't think the circumstances are quite analogous. And anyway, it was a firing, not a resignation. And MacArthur wasn't a civilian cabinet official.

The status quo is blatantly not getting what it wants, and they're throwing a temper tantrum. It's the most glorious thing I've seen in my lifetime.

Are you trying to paint the picture of the "reality" of military industrial complex and/or deep state? It seems that isn't far fetched.

Trump may have done "the right thing" in withdrawing from Syria, but has he overreached himself with this move? If he falls now, the lesson for his successors will be to bow down to the deep state.

It makes you think. It's not like Trump hasn't be open about his foreign policy. It almost makes you think that some people could impose their will over the President and what he campaigned on. 🤷‍♂️

Maybe the punditocracy and out-of-work ex-military leaders can put together a march on Washington. “Occupation now, occupation tomorrow, occupation foreveh!”

The DC establishment now believes it is entitled to endless pointless war fattening its pockets. They kept the wars going through 8 years of Obama against all his promises. And two years of Trump against all of his. Why give up and allow the people the peace they voted for now?

I wonder if this is mostly because unlike say JFK, Trump probably never bothered to consult w/ his advisers and just decided to shoot from the hip.

I think he had to resign because he needed to alert the outside world that the Pres. is doing something that can cause US to lose power in the ME&in front of the eyes of our allies. In this way, he will get pressure from external forces that will hopefully stop his decision.
