Pinpointing the exact cause of Late Night TV's precipitous decline can be tricky. Yes it's Trump, but not only. It's also that the "Daily Show" sensibility has become the norm; there's nothing edgy about that snark-style anymore. It's just status quo nowhttps://twitter.com/mtracey/status/1072299942490836997 …

Late Night TV has become a tedious monoculture that thinks it's subversive because every host hates Trump, but nothing could be less subversive than goofily idolizing Robert Mueller, which these shows do on a nightly basis. They're also not funny. My item: https://spectator.us/late-night-lusting-mueller/ …

Some have asked how I would propose to remedy this problem. Sadly I'm not producing a TV comedy show. But if I were, I might consider trying to operate from a different comedic premise. That sounds vague, but all of these hosts seem to start from the exact same "first principles"

"liberal" or "anti-Trump" don't fully capture the nature of their shared comedic premise. Obviously that's a part. But it's also about clinging to a remnant of 2000s-era snark culture that has no self-awareness of how it's now *by far* the dominant sensibility in the industry

I agree with your premise, but I think the decline is further back than you think. Leno/Dave/Conan weren't all that funny or edgy either. They shoveled the Hollywood BS like everybody, and writers wrote for their wider audience. I think its all a matter of programming choices.

Longer than that for me. Back when I cared about sports I stopped watching ESPN because of it. The snark goes way back with them.

It's snark without actual bite or intelligence unlike Jon Stewart. It's not anti-establishment, smart, productive, funny or revealing to say Trump sucks. It's like saying, "Is it hot enough for you?" when it's hot except more banal.

this isn't just a US phenomenon. political satire in Britain has a similarly centrist reflex and is also stuck echoing forms and styles of a decade previous (in our case The Thick Of It).

It really was after Jon left. No one could replace Jon. The Daily Show should have died then. Just like SNL. After the good ones go, let the damn thing end.

The Daily Show set the bar pretty high at one point, as did SNL, but it is been steadily downhill since the Putin brain worms took hold.https://youtu.be/gd7P78w8cdA

It's the combination of snark and the fact they are definitely not one bit, not in any remote way, speaking truth to power. If they did, they'd be in the Ecuadorian embassy in London. Or at least fired.

I'm so tired of people acting like Trump is funny. These late night hosts are feeding into that attitude every single night. There's absolutely nothing funny about Trump, The way the media treated Michelle Wolff after her correspondents dinner monologue is more suited to Trump.

It began when Trump won. Before that, the comics thought they were skewering an obvious one-off, someone who could not win. That's why Fallon was beaten up for not joining in. When Trump won, they realized they only had half the country and could hate on the other half.

If you take a look at when the PC movement took over college campuses, I think you’ll find the day comedy died.
