My mom got one of those a few years ago. She was freaking out.

I worked in a call center, transcribing calls for the deaf/hard of hearing. I had several of those calls and couldn’t do anything about it. We weren’t allowed to disconnect the call and not allowed to warn the customer. It was extremely upsetting to me.
-
That is unfortunate, your workplace shouldn’t be able to force you to participate in a crime.

NSA has the number for that call. Think our government will do anything about it? Nope!

Oh I got one a few months ago demanding that I appear in court on criminal charges in a county adjacent to where I live. I was TERRIFIED for a full 5-10 minutes until I realized (with my husband needing to confirm because I was so scared) that it was a scam - AND I AM A LAWYER.

As heinous as it is..& without in any way trivializing it - it's symptomatic of the whole freaking exploitive mess that is "the Economy." Here's one of the better pieces I've read recently about the mega-issue that blankets the whole landscape:https://www.nytimes.com/2018/12/02/opinion/elizabeth-warren-2020-accountable-capitalism.html?action=click&module=Opinion&pgtype=Homepage …

I love talking with these people! I’ve played dumb, I’ve “misheard” important information, I’ve asked the address of their bank so can test their knowledge, I’ve accused them of racism, I’ve screamed at them to put me on with a manager, and my favorite, pretended I was a machine.
-
I once spent a huge amount of time with this guy. I told him I would send him $100 if he would just admit he was just scamming people. After he finally did, I told him to go get a PO box then call me back with the address..... then I blocked him.

Whatever happened to spam call protections? I get a dozen of these a day. Particularly annoying - and expensive - when I’m traveling overseas.

They can spoof new numbers when one gets blocked.

Yeah, just FYI the IRS doesn't call you. They send you a very nice and heart stopping letter instead. :^)

I got one of them not long ago. 1) I pay my taxes, 2) I'm a small $ taxpayer, not worthy of IRS time/effort, 3) IRS would communicate in writing, 4) There'd be forewarning b4 elevating to this level. Definitely enraging to think of the vulnerable who fall prey to this crap. :(

I got one when I was in the states accusing me of fraud. It freaked me the fuck out for a few minutes until I realized it was a scam.

Perhaps if our Senators and Reps were less interested in attacking Trump and his appointees and more interested in protecting those who elect them, they would find and arrest these telephone scammers.
-
Where “attacking” means “investigating criminal activity”? Sure.

I always ask “what’s your relationship to the victim”? I then tell them they’ve called the scene of a murder and I need their contact information so investigators can follow up. Usually get a hang up about then...
