Well-adjusted people with social skills can generally get along in social settings: not a novel insight (although one often obscured by the hellish frenzy of Twitter). Issue is whether personal affection causes you to abandon principle or temper criticismhttps://www.nytimes.com/2018/12/03/opinion/bari-weiss-eve-peyser-friendship.html …

Especially when the people share gender, age, religion, and location.

I definitely think personal affection lowers the level vitriol, but I think that's good. After all, isnt it possible to strongly criticize someone in a civil manner?

It sure as hell should be. I try very hard not to rage tweet. I have faltered once or twice but try hard to be civil. But, personal affection is difficult to find in this setting. People can be “just tweets”

I believe that the traditional solution to this problem was for journalists to simply not socialize with the people they write about. Seems like maybe we ought not to abandon a rule that works.

Because it was a performance of civility not digging into issue w/ media playing referee from on high. If Bari repeated some of her statements in front of certain ppl, they’d not get along! Maybe how I handled the PB as opposition organizer would have been more illustrative?

Social agreeableness is a positive trait beneficial to the individual but not necessarily to society at large. Be kind, be civil, but know your convictions and red lines. https://mic.com/articles/92479/psychologists-have-uncovered-a-troubling-feature-of-people-who-seem-nice-all-the-time …pic.twitter.com/vrFddG4iIo

What happened to putting in effort to not spew hatred when presented with something that contradicts your thinking? That thing where people were impressed by your civility when discussing difficult topics, instead of your ability to bully someone into silence...🤔 I miss that😞

Well, let’s see, seems that criticism of other humans is generally tempered, (even major idiots), esp. those in-network. After all, we might need each other someday. Nice if of we left a bridge to cross. But, then, not a journalist.

It SHOULD do the latter. I think our society is definitely due for a whole lot of more tempered criticism. (As evidence by the "hellish frenzy of Twitter)
