Here's Chris Matthews reminiscing about the time George HW Bush hosted him in the White House for dinner and a movie. Matthews, then a correspondent for Hearst newspapers, admits he "had a hard time being tough on him" afterwardshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-IKF3JNnPcg …

Mike Ryko wrote an excellent column in the 90's about why he turned down a visit to the White House. Many in the media could learn from his example.

Thank goodness we have the bulwark of the press to speak truth to power....unless they pull out the big guns like dinner and a movie....

It’s also interesting to observe the passive-aggressiveness, immaturity and insincerity of many pieces about HW’s death. Many read like thinly-veiled stabs at Trump, particularly the ones that play up supposed “acts of kindness”, “patriotism” and “civility”.

The Official Media(TM) hagiography of the late 41 may be nauseating, but this relentless contrarianism is really wearing thin by now. Had his flaws, but overall the world improved immensely while he was in office (not necessarily his doing, but still he can't have been so bad).

@barryeisler IMO does he consider "that effect might have been by design" and he'd boast of it. AFAIK, our journalists and voters commonly know how their handlers manipulate them, consider it a complement, and may take pride in gullibility. Too cynical?

The mere fact that Tingles talks about being "tough" tells us all we need to know. Journalists are supposed to report the facts. And besides, I doubt very much if he knows anything about toughness.

For the venerable DC punditry class, it's all about their access privileges and flattering awards ceremonies. No actual critique of power in Washington.
