Bernie Sanders has a national political infrastructure, locked-in support from significant portions of the electorate, and an alternative media ecosystem that is intensely devoted to him. The fact that his 2020 chances are being so heavily downplayed is borderline delusional

He's most likely going to be running against a huge field of people who are very similar to one another in numerous respects, so even eking out a plurality would be sufficient in the early stages of the primary (as Trump demonstrated last time)

He's even done things to address relatively marginal weaknesses, like on foreign policy (successfully ushering though the truly groundbreaking Yemen resolution). He extracted a concession directly from Jeff Bezos! Name another national politician with that kind of sway

The attacks are going to be brutal (endless identity stuff) but he has the resources in place to withstand them. And for people moaning about age: he's four years older than Trump and almost certainly in better health (fewer cheeseburgers) so whatever. Ageism is very offensive!

I like your article but you didn't weigh the optics of Sanders run based on whether or not trump even makes it to 2020 given his mounting legal troubles and assumed impeachment.

Assuming impeachment is a little much, but you’re right that of course there is the potential for a host of unforeseen variables. Point of the piece was more to take a snapshot of the political landscape as it stands today
