The notion that rural voters are intrinsically deluded and/or evil is a core tenet of modern Dem politics, or least among the most vocal. And they just keep doubling down on this failed strategy. Actually, more of a mental illness than a political strategy.

And it will get worse as they come to realize the the Constitution was written to intentionally prevent them from being able to force urbanist policies on the rural population by pure force of numbers.

It’s outright hostility and they’ve abandoned any attempts to make it appear as anything else.

Stalin did the same with the peasant farmers, as did Mao.

What has Trump delivered to the rural voter that has seen demonstrable benefits?

Um, I'm pretty sure the Democrats have been doing this for decades, if not generations.

They could, but then the Obama/Clinton Dems would then have to actually get out of bed with the Bushist Republicans on trade policy with their friends in Sweatshop China and on Wall Street. Once again, a Rich Man’s Trick...

And this is after a generation of Dems pushing trade policy that has devastated the Midwest and rural America generally. They can’t/won’t reckon with the damage they’ve done. They would rather blame the victims.

Any statistical analyses on whether they do need rural voters? I'm pretty sure Texas/Florida are plenty, and those are both somewhat hybrid states in terms of population.

Or they will simply conclude that they are generally Trump's base and cannot be won.

Maybe our fixation on material considerations, with concomitant subordination of every aspect of life to economy's needs, is part of our problem. More to life than making money & buying things; perhaps a shift in guiding values & ideals may be a partial solution. Just a hunch.

The problem isn’t that rural America is all bad. It’s just that in the Senate they are over-represented and frequently the 30–45% of Dem votes end up counting for nothing so the areas get ignored.

Not a surprise if the only lens one sees the world though is secular economic materialism.

When their conservative/libertarian principles of limited government, free markets, and personal liberty have been replaced by more tribal tenets like "Own the Libs", "Trump is always right", and "I've got mine, screw anyone else", it's hard to come together for nuanced debate

At least it's not as bad as them writing off the White working class which was 40% of the electorate. Rural voters are less than 25% of the electorate.

Or they'll write them off as cro-magnons who vote against their own interests. Oh, wait...

It's not complicated. They can't win over the racists who voted for Trump, but there are a huge number of discouraged non-voters whom they can get. I am infurated at people who pretend to not understand this.
