"Discourse" has always been debated even in the midst of real-world events unfolding, including much more grievous harms than are going on today. I don't see how that's any kind of argument against the essay being published

I can't believe we environmentalists are still left out. If the right could stand up off their knees and stop slurping extractive industry, we'd be ripe for picking. The case against open borders is that America is already overpopulated. We need a pop reduction policy.

It’s that it’s unethical and anyone describing a Left case is going to be called out on Leftist grounds (whose major plank is internationalism & anti-capitalism) for a reactionary, old position rebranding as “fresh perspective.” Kind of like the IDW!!

What orthodoxy? Today we have, what, 6000 military on border overseeing in a civilian capacity, given lethal force. Dems aren’t demanding the border be open. Even FB’s firm she cited isn’t pro-open border. Poses little case as to how border controls helphttps://twitter.com/tippingelements/status/1065417395013992448?s=21 …

To say nothing of the profoundly negative impact it has on American workers (but who cares about them any more in any case?). It's hardly comforting to be on the same side of an issue as the Koch Brothers.

I think a lot more lefties need to come out as xenophile restrictionists and discuss the merits of a nuanced approach to immigration.

Rancor expressed about her on twitter is totally at odds with arguments of Nagle in that essay. Hard to disagree with her arguments about (1) migration is caused by wars, unfair "trade" agreements (2) migration may benefit target country but a total disaster for source country.

Because no one is arguing for "open borders" except for a small faction of the DSA. It's not worthy of argument. It's like if people say they want Medicare for All, and somebody writes "Why does the left want to be like Venezuela?" Who said that? It's a strawman.

@LPNational has been arguing for open borders since about their inception. - 7 more replies

“Open borders” is not and has not been a party orthodoxy on the left. It’s a bullshit canard levied by the opposition who does not bother to comprehend any position other than their “kill everyone at the border” wet dream.
-
Considering the fact that multi-national corporations have bought out large portions of the liberal activist movement, it was only a matter of time before they got leftists to support open borders, something which is ultimately a detriment to working class people.

they don’t suggest that at all, they suggest the piece is racist, ahistorical, and disingenuous — she doesn’t come from the left at all
