@Steve_Sailer
Good economic times paradoxically allowed the “fiscally conservative, socially liberal” suburbanites to indulge their superficial distaste of Trump’s “tone and style.”
That’s how the good economy hurt the GOP. It allowed them to be snobs.

The McCain and Ryan Legacy. Failing to pass the Healthcare Bill Opened the GOP to unfounded entitlement attacks the biggest factor. Passing anything or not attempting to pass a bill at all both better than trying and failing. Ryan not defending any seats, complicit.

Exactly, they had both chambers and the presidency and the only major legislation was tax cuts, which ended up not being as popular as expected and will get butched by a Dem House in the next 2 years. Nothing on immigration or healthcare. They failed us.

Trump's almost supernatural ability to recast failure as martyrdom doesn't benefit anybody by association, apparently.

Although capping the SALT deduction was one of the only good parts of the tax bill.

It's odd that it gets attributed to any particular thing or person at all. In my lifetime there have been 15 midterms. The President's party lost seats in 13 of them, the only two times they didn't there were well understood mitigating circumstances.

It's not odd. If you haven't noticed yet, establishment politicians will find any scapegoat they can to excuse themselves/their party for their failings. Reflection implies a willingness to change.

And Paul Ryan was such a r.i.n.o. the whole 2 years! And they let us down with Healthcare & The Wall.

wouldn't classify it as a "loss" but more as a re-alignment. it was known SALT was going to blow out Republicans in blue states while helping them in red states. just another piece of red states getting redder, blue ones bluer.

*SALT (State and Local Taxes) deduction, as in doing away with it in House version or like in the final version heavily curtailing it.
