Massachusetts electing Republicans in 6 of its last 8 gubernatorial races seems like a somewhat under-examined phenomenon

Neoliberism: keep taxes low, make money out of capital, keep my neighborhood white and pay lip service to cultural progressive issues. In other words limousine liberals.

I can say this as a person from Mass, we aren't as partisan on the local level. We prefer republicans and democrats in the state legislature to compromise and get along. I know a lot of people who vote a mixed ballot. I think we can be pretty practical in that way. It's nice.

Fiscally conservative, socially liberal politics there. Former driven by attaction and roots in the puritan work ethic and ethos. This means any republican that runs on fiscal side and isn't ruling themselves out on social issues can be very electable.

Which part is underexamined? The part where the governors are socially liberal, or the part where they’re fiscally conservative?

MA "Republicans" are actual fact Democrats in nearly every other state. "Republicans" who win in MA only join the GOP so they can make it past the Dem primaries.

Watch some of the campaign ads. We have pretty much beaten the state GOP into submission and they run candidates who run on bipartisanship and appealing to the left. Conversely, the Democratic Party candidates use the strong party machine to backbite and fight each other.

Also, our Republicans, sadly, are more liberal than the Democrats in most parts of the nation. Hell, even Romney passed his version of the ACA. This makes them somewhat more palatable because they run in contrast to the national GOP, who are insane, and "Dems" like Manchin.

They’ve all been barely Republicans. Socially liberal, fiscally conservative. They get elected so Dem bosses can pass off no new tax increases on the R Gov. Otherwise machine would chew them up like every other statewide office.
