Dems clearly made major gains in some traditionally GOP areas (eg Orange County, outlying Dallas, parts of northern/central NJ): issue going forward is whether concentrating gains in these kinds of affluent suburbs is necessarily conducive to winning a national election

Yeah now that the Dems have The OC they might finally win California.

Are they "real" gains? Or are they Doug Jones obviously-just-a-Republican gains? (Honest question, not meant to sound sarcastic or douchey.)

Orange County has gone Democrat a long time ago; it's only the inertia of incumbency that kept its congressional delegation Republican this long. There's always been a significant D vote there - they went bankrupt 30ish years ago under a Dem county treasurer.

It's more fun though than going to ravaged, poor neighborhoods and actually talking to people in massive need? And that's what the leadership corpo dems like - fun and money...

Even more than that--whether it's conducive to effective progressive policy change. So far, @NancyPelosi says "No."

In 2010 Obama suffered some of the biggest midterms losses we’ve ever seen and still won comfortably in 2012.

Believing that Mexico was paying for a wall was conducive to winning a national election.

More intractable: Dems aren't going to do anything remotely progressive and the good reformers who won are too isolated

The main issue is whether they will use these gains to advance corporate agendas

With the OC coming around maybe Hillary can beat Trump by 10 million votes in CA in 2020. Of course, Trump will still win the same 30 States he did in 2016, but at least the clueless Clinton supporters can point out how she won the popular vote. #Ojeda2020

There are many variables to take into consideration. I was wondering how many suburban women watch CNN or MSNBC. I'm curious, how much power does the biased, fake news have?

It would be a liability for the Dems if the GOP ran the right sort of campaign, but they probably won't.
