Note to headline writers: if you "request" a subordinate's resignation, you are firing that person

I mean not legally. Sessions could of declined the request and forced Trump to fire him. By resigning it allows Trump to appoint his guy.

it’s less clear cut than that afaik; in theory he could still appoint “his guy” if he outright fired Sessions. see the Federal Vacancies Reform Act of 1998.https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/opinion/rosenstein-fired-or-resigned-heres-why-the-distinction-matters …

Inaccurate. Sessions could have refused to resign. Then Trump would have had to have fired him which has different legal ramifications and different optics.

I think it does technically matter on who takes over next.

Shouldn't that be something for the body of the article to address, not the headline? Since requesting a resignation vs terminating someone is not technically or legally the same thing even if it serves the same end.

Requesting a resignation is a distinctly pro-managerial class euphemism.

No, you are ensuring his or her termination, but allowing him or her to do it through a self-action instead of doing it yourself. If Sessions refused to resign, then Trump would have actually fired him. Legally, there is a difference.
