No conservative defense of him that I’ve seen acknowledges these amply demonstrated lies. Rather than address it, the pivot is always made to media/left-wing unfairness. Fine: let’s stipulate that media/left is unfair. How does that justify blatant lying?https://twitter.com/ggreenwald/status/1046372256245587968 …

Again, even those who harbor doubts about the truth of the core allegations can't rationally deny that, at least on other matters, Brett Kavanaugh lied: deliberately and repeatedly and with a strategic motive. If you want to argue it doesn't matter, do that, but he did lie: https://twitter.com/NathanJRobinson/status/1046086609505071105 …

Here's just one example for people who refuse to read. Kavanaugh claims he "never attended a gathering like the one Ford describes." The gathering Ford describes *perfectly matches* a gathering listed on the very calendar that *Kavanaugh himself provided* as exculpatory evidence.pic.twitter.com/WjzCeHIWHx

Whatever you want to call this move: a lie, a misdirection, a misrepresentation, a mischaracterization -- it's clearly in the realm of provable deceit, and if anyone should be held to the highest possible standards for committing deceit, it's aspiring Supreme Court justices.

If you don't care about this deceit, don't think it's disqualifying, or don't think it ever should have come up in the first place: OK, make that argument. But refusing to acknowledge that his plainly-spoken words here even *constitute* deceit is coming across as sheer denialism.

As someone who meticulously documented Hillary Clinton's carefully-phrased deceptions and lies, and was told it didn't matter because of some convoluted lawyerly parsing, to be denounced by conservatives for applying the exact same rigor to Kavanaugh is amusing.

That depends on how you interpret his statement. I interpreted it as a literal reference to Ford, not a categorical rejection of ever drinking with friends in small groups, which he admits elsewhere.

"perfectly matches"? Was Leland there? Was Ford there? Did he get drunk and paw her? Maybe THAT'S what he means when he said he "never attended a gathering like the one Ford describes". Are you really incapable of seeing that possibility?

Understand the sentiment, but a gathering of four guys is different than a mixed-gender gathering. I would have answered that particular question the same. Of course, that doesn't mean that Kavanaugh didn't lie elsewhere. There are probably better examples.

Maybe he means a gathering like one where he sexually assaulted someone? He’s never been to a party like that? The party on 7/1 appears to have been a 7-guy sausage fest, in any case, and also not a pool party.

But Michael, I never wrote on my calendar that I was going to rape someone. So obviously I didn't attend the rape event. It's not on there. I am curious, has anyone corroborated his account that his dad kept detailed calendars? Was that bullshit to cover his lie?

That is one part that i tend to find believable.. Why? Because my Mom does the same thing with calendars. In her attic is a box of calendars that she wrote notes on every day of the year. Did I go to my 10th grade homecoming dance? Check Moms calendar!

That's a bogus argument. It doesn't prove that the gatherings in the calender are *exactly* the same as what Ford described. There could easily be important differences.

Wow a lot of assumptions here! The calendar never said anything about girls being at this gathering. Rather it relates to guys getting together....big difference.

An after work-out gathering is not the same as the party she describes. Funny, if these "parties" took place with some regularity, you'd think one could name where one of them took place.
