Kavanaugh just said polygraph tests are "not reliable" (which is true) but also said in a written court opinion two years ago that they're "an important law enforcement tool," presumably implying reliability. Blatant self-serving contradiction.

Saying that they are not reliable enough for court, but that law enforcement can use it as a tool is not contradictory. Such tests only prove that you have physical reactions to certain questions. They might alert law enforcement that you need further scrutiny. They're not proof.

He said they’re “not reliable.” He also said they can be reliably used for “important” law enforcement functions. That is a contradiction.

Possibly not a contradiction, just cynical; polygraphs are indeed a valuable tool for law enforcement in their pursuit of "evidence" of guilt from whomever they want to be found guilty, their actual unreliability even possibly an asset in this.

The distinction between “important” and “reliable” is trivial enough that this can be reasonably understood as contradictory.

They are an effective tool in getting people to talk, not so much in detecting lies.

The case is abt a FOIA request. Kavanaugh was not ruling on the validity of polygraph tests but whether or not documents related to polygraph tests were "compiled for law enforcement purposes", in which case they cd be withheld. He ruled that they were compiled for such purposes.

tbf I don't see these as necessarily contradictory - polygraphs ARE an effective interrogation device, just not an effective lie-detector.

Could be that police observation of a suspect and their reaction to a polygraph is useful more than the results of a polygraph.
