I'm trying and failing to understand how this showy, indignant, borderline-petulant performance could evoke sympathy. Might be some kind of unexamined bias on my part. Will have to ponder.

I’d be pissed if I were him. He’s rather composed comparatively to what I would be. I guess that’s why I’ve never been nominated to be a federal judge.

You really have to take into account the possibility that he's perhaps telling the truth. You seem to have convicted him in your mind already. I have zero interest or game in who is guilty or innocent in this (Centrist Scot), but I found Ford questionable, and Kavanough sincere.

I challenge anyone to have their life's reputation on the line which, if he is to be believed, has been totally and baselessly maligned, while remaining wholly composed.

I'm glad he's going to go after the Dems they thought they were getting free shots

Many people were already convinced before today of who they were going to believe, and are merely cheering on their side. As a neutral I found it all deeply unedifying and unsettling. Serious allegations should be brought before a court, not turned into a drama performance.

You're right. It's your bias showing

Because we empathize. Some of us are like him. When we think of our parents, friends, children, God, we can be brought to tears by the sincerity of our emotions. This is a decent man.

You are one of the best there is at accounting for your own bias--it's why I love following you even though I'm nominally "conservative." In this case, I think you are missing the fact that the charges demand an emotional response. "Composure" would be filtered as "guilt."

I think it was pretty tone deaf for him to aggressively interrupt an 80 yr old woman, raise his voice, & be short in answering questions. I can forgive kavanaughs emotion, I can’t forgive his petulance & his whininess. As well as blaming the Clintons... WTF is that?

You'd stay composed in the presence of those who attacked you unjustly in an effort to destroy you? With all due respect it's easy to say you'd react that way without actually being IN that context. Anger is the proper response to certain injustices.

Don’t think you’re wrong, Michael. His answers are very bizarre for an innocent person.

Damn dude, at least you're being open minded about it. So many people aren't these days.

I saw it within a normal range of human reactions - why are you so invested in composure as a superior 'approach'? It comes off as haughty and judgemental.
