depression is weird cuz like when ur depressed u are correct in feeling that the world is shit and everything is terrible and when ur not depressed all of that is still true and yet you somehow feel okay with it

But depression causes you to incorrectly transmute the shittiness of the world into an indictment of you personally as irredeemably shitty. Which leads to a distorted perception. Maybe "illness" isn't the right term, but I'm not really a fan of romanticized notions of depression

Ya I def don’t wanna romanticize it at all. It sucks a lot. I just think it’s based in a rational reaction to the world not just arbitrary.

On some level it's probably a rational reaction, but the effects it produces are almost entirely irrational. I guess it varies by person, but recursive thoughts, excessive self-doubt, paranoia, fear, seclusion, etc. generally don't help you perceive the world more clearly

I think that captures more accurately what I was trying to say. I agree that there can be rational, reality-based triggers, but it’s where a depressed person goes from there that is what distinguishes depression from things that aren’t depression.

Right. You can have a view of the world grounded in what some reasonably call "depressive realism," but allowing that to ravage your own psyche is another issue altogether
