I trust APPLE to play a role in deciding what we shouldn't see & hear. I mean they've always done the right thing. When workers in China who make their phones tried to leap to their deaths to escape the working conditions? Nets were put up to catch them! See what I mean?

Social media usage by the masses threatens the ruling elite. Regular people can call out NeoCon MSM propaganda and elites want this to stop.

Are you arguing that FB, Twiter and YouTube, all private companies, don't have the right to police their property as they see it? If you are arguing that, then you don't understand freedom.

Facebook at this point is clearly a public utility.

Watch Adam Curtis' Hypernormalisation. It sort of outlines how this started in the late 70s. Power being given to the financial/tech titans to try to predict and control humanity. Great points on the topic Michael.

So can somebody describe, in detail, what the doomsday scenario is that we should be so frightened of? Not just buzzwords about the “powers that be” or whatever. What is the specific scenario that everybody is actually afraid of?

The thing we really should fear is this irrational misinterpretation of free speech from 'the need to defend the right to speak even the most offensive of speech' into 'ONLY the most offensive of speech needs defending'.pic.twitter.com/JZ5YtE1135

Probably best to tell the people not to use Facebook for news.

What's to be done? Like you, I find the policy implications worrying, but under current law, the platforms are within their rights to purge Infowars (assuming no basis for contractual liability under ToS) Is the answer creating new, unfettered Twitter/YouTube-esque platforms?

Tyranny. And the people fall for it every time because of the 'soft kill' propaganda that leads up to it.

I think it started earlier. Here's Eric Schmidt calling for "spell-checkers" for hate and harassment back in Dec. '15 so that the internet wouldn't empower "the wrong people, and the wrong voices.": https://www.nytimes.com/2015/12/07/opinion/eric-schmidt-on-how-to-build-a-better-web.html …
