Apocalyptic angst has always fed certain strains of US political expression. There are powerful financial, psychological, and social incentives for it. But now this tendency animates both the fringes *and* the mainstream. That, it seems, is different

Your piece fleshed out what U said succinctly in your tweet, & what many of us say daily: Too much of our anger's being "safely" channeled into yelling for side A or B of the false dichotomy that eclipses issues on which ALL of us should be more focused, now!

It’s trendy to say so and it fits some facts. Still I don’t think this is a useful modelisation of the current situation. We need more nuances.

It does not matter who is in office, the leader conforms to the office, not the other way around. It's an ontological reality, not teleological or force of will. If the leader acts outside the parameters of his nation, he's done, if he not, he's predictable. Hegelian, no goal.

Can't we just agree that he's symbol for vitriolic and/or adoring hyperbole than anything else? And while we are at it, that his demeanor is no more or less fitting for a President than half the things LBJ did.

I agree, except his admin is *drastically* shrinking the parts of govt which don't directly help corporations, including dismantling regulatory agencies. Granted, this program has been supported by the Republican Party since well before 2016. But it is extreme nonetheless.

"Trump as more or less a continuation of the status quo with some tonal differences" gives you a lot of wiggle room to claim you were right if things turn out to be less a continuation of the status quo. You're right that the case for setting one's hair on fire is quite oversold.
